Dictionary term
Agentic AI
Also called agentic systems
AI systems that pursue a goal by planning steps, calling tools and acting on the results with limited human direction, ranging from fixed LLM workflows with predefined code paths to agents that direct their own process.
In plain English
AI that does tasks rather than just answering questions: you give it a goal and it takes the steps, using your apps along the way.
Analogy
Like the difference between a reference librarian who answers questions and an assistant who goes off, runs the errands and reports back.
Why it matters
It is the umbrella term for the shift from chatbots to systems that act, so knowing where a build sits on the workflow-to-agent spectrum tells you how much autonomy, testing and human approval it needs.
In practice
A lead-response system that reads a form submission, enriches the contact, scores the lead, drafts a reply and books a call in the CRM, with a person approving anything sent to the customer.
